SYNOPSIS

In 1815 France, a prisoner named Jean Valjean is released from prison on parole. After being rejected multiple times in his plight to find work, he stumbles upon a monastery where the Bishop offers him shelter. Valjean decides to head out once more and steals the silverware belonging to the monastery, but upon being captured, the Bishop declares that he has gifted Valjean the silverware – a kindness that few have ever shown Valjean. This event inspires change, and Jean Valjean disguises himself and decides to earn an honest keep – while breaking his parole.

Years later, as the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer and a factory owner, Valjean, disguised as Monsieur Madeleine, comes to the aid of a young woman and former employee, Fantine, by promising to rescue her daughter from a greedy innkeeper and his wife. Upon Fantine’s death, Valjean takes it upon himself to raise little Cosette. Javert, Valjean’s parole officer, has continued to pursue him over the years.

Unrest starts to grow in France, and Cosette, now a young woman, falls in love with one of the student revolutionaries. This leads to much difficulty – difficulties that can only be overcome by hope, love, and sacrifice.

Les Misérables is an enormous, gorgeous, bleeding heart – one that elevates like no other, breaks hearts and stitches them back together like no other, and moves like no other. It is indeed a remarkable feat that Victor Hugo’s tale has never left the world, and that even now, four decades later, Les Misérables is still adored, still ever as powerful, and still as marvelous as ever. Even though some parts of the story content might have been adapted for this event, there is no other way to put it, than to say that Les Misérables: The Arena Concert Spectacular is an celebratory, glorious love letter to the original.
