The full 2016 film La La Land with a live orchestra and a dedicated jazz band conducted by the film's composer, Justin Hurwitz. The tour stops in 2026 include Mexico City (January 17), Austin (February 14), Orlando (March 28), Toronto (March 7), New York (April 11), and more.
The runtime mirrors the film's 128 minutes, with the orchestra playing continuously, matching the film note for note.
Directed by Damien Chazelle, La La Land is a musical romance starring Ryan Gosling as Sebastian, a passionate jazz pianist dreaming of opening his own club, and Emma Stone as Mia, a barista and aspiring actress auditioning in Hollywood. These two just can't get away from each other, as the film continuously throws them together in traffic jams, rooftop dances, and starry nights across Los Angeles. Enjoy huge, bouncy numbers like "City of Stars" and the energetic "A Lovely Night," as Sebastian goes gigging in pop bands to pay bills and Mia stages one-woman shows. But they need more, and their relentless pursuit of their individual dreams strains their bond and brings us to the heart-wrenching "what if."
With a score blending jazz, classical, and Broadway flair, it earned 14 Oscar nominations, a record tied only by Titanic, and eventually won six, including Best Director, Score, Song ("City of Stars"), Cinematography, Production Design, and Sound Mixing. The film employs a deliberate color palette, with Mia's arc shifting from cool blues to warm golds as she achieves success, while Sebastian's stays in earthy tones. The film's opening sequence, "Another Day of Sun," was filmed over two days on the 101 Freeway, closing it for 56 hours and involving 100 dancers in a single unbroken shot illusion.
Winning two Oscars for La La Land: Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("City of Stars"), Justin Hurwitz really knocked it out of the park with this film. And he will be hitting the road with the tour to conduct the 53-piece orchestra, including strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, and a core jazz ensemble of piano, bass, drums, and horns. He has also been known to add subtle improvisations to jazz sections, making each performance unique.
The jazz band section of the orchestra comes from the original musicians who played on the original soundtrack recordings and are all natives of LA. The show will also include guest soloists, such as the original film's trumpeter for Sebastian's club scenes.
Spanning a full city block on Sixth Avenue, Radio City Music Hall is the world's largest indoor theater, seating 6,000 people across orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony levels, and the Great Stage is one of the largest mechanized stages anywhere, capable of rising 6 feet, sinking 27 feet, and shifting scenery via hydraulic lifts. It opened back in 1932 as part of Rockefeller Center and has been home to the Radio City Rockettes since 1933.
