Melanie Martinez already had a unique persona when she debuted in The Voice Season 3 in 2012. Although she wasn’t successful in winning the reality series, Martinez came back with a vengeance. In 2014, she dropped her debut EP Dollhouse. The major label debut featured the singles “Dollhouse” and “Carousel.” The Eo also spent 13 weeks on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums, peaking at number 4. Martinez promoted the EP with a massive tour spanning from 2014 to 2015.
After the success of her debut EP, Martinez dropped her debut studio album, Cry Baby. The record became an immediate commercial success, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Alternative Albums chart. The record, which spawned singles “Pity Party,” “Soap,” “Sippy Cup,” and “Mrs. Potato Head,” showcased Martinez’s unique approach to electro-pop. Garnering rave reviews from fans and critics, the album was eventually certified double-platinum after selling over two million copies in the U.S. In the same year, Martinez dropped a deluxe edition of Cry Baby. The album spawned the sleeper hit “Playdate.”

K-12 peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and dominated the Top Alternative and Top Soundtrack Albums charts. Martinez also achieved phenomenal international success, entering the charts in 25 other countries. The 2019 film K-12 is a whimsical fantasy film about Martinez’ alter ego, “Cry Baby.”
