In 2018, Lil Nas X released the song “Old Town Road.” The single was not an immediate hit, with Lil Nas X using over 100 Internet memes to promote it. Upon uploading it on the social media platform, Tik Tok, the song went viral in 2019 thanks to the Yeehaw Challenge. The song, which debuted at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, eventually climbed to the top. After becoming viral, Lil Nas X signed with Columbia Records. In the same year, a remix of “Old Town Road” was recorded with Billy Ray Cyrus. The remixed song broke records and became the most streamed single, amassing 143 million streams in one week. In June 2019, Lil Nas X released his first extended play, 7, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. The record featured the hit singles “Old Town Road,” “Panini,” and “Rodeo,” performed with Cardi B.

In 2021, Lil Nas X released his debut studio album, Montero, spawning the singles “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” “Sun Goes Down,” “Industry Baby,” and “That’s What I Want.” The record features guest artists like Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, Jack Harlow, and Miley Cyrus. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 Countdown and entered the charts in 21 other countries.

Despite his music career being fairly new, Lil Nas X has already received numerous accolades for “Old Town Road (Remix),” including an American Music Award, two BET Hip-Hop Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards. His 2021 single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” also won an American Music Award for Favorite Music Video.
