Kehlani’s introduction into the music scene was in 2011 when they auditioned for America’s Got Talent with their group, Poplyfe. After parting ways with the girl band, Kehlani, with the help of Nick Cannon (who was the host of America's Got Talent during Poplyfe’s run), independently released their mixtapes, Cloud 19 and You Should Be Here. The records, which were released digitally, were highly acclaimed by critics. You Should Be Here entered the top 40 of the Billboard 200, peaked at number 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and number 2 on the Top R&B charts. Moreover, Kehlani earned their first Grammy nod when You Should Be Here was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Their successful mixtapes caught the attention of several record labels.

Eventually, Kehlani signed with Atlantic Records and released their debut album, SweetSexySavage, in 2017. The record went straight to number 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200. Spawning the hit songs “Crzy,” “Distraction,” and “Gangsta,” the record sold more than 500,000 copies, earning them their first gold certification. Three years after SweetSexySavage was dropped, Kehlani released their follow-up album, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. The album was preceded by singles “Can I,” “F&MU,” “Toxic,” and “Everybody’s Business.” The record also featured several guest artists, including Ty Dolla Sign, James Blake, Tony Lanez, Jhené Aiko, Masego, and Lucky Daye.

This year, Kehlani just dropped their latest album, Blue Water Road. The record features renowned guest artists like Justin Bieber, Thundercat, Blxst, Sud, Jessie Reyes, and Ambre. Like all their previous efforts, Kehlani were the lead writers for all the tracks in the critically-acclaimed groundbreaking album.
